Two related meanings. (1) The mixing position in the audience where the FOH engineer mixes the main PA, usually a console riser 30–80 feet back from the stage. (2) The FOH engineer themselves, who controls what the audience hears. Distinct from the monitor engineer, who mixes what the band hears on stage. Larger productions have dedicated FOH and monitor engineers; smaller acts often have one person doubling up or rely on the house engineer. The FOH spot at the venue must be unobstructed, on a level floor, and clear of paying customers.
