Before the shipping container, cargo was loaded piece by piece. A cargo ship could spend as much time in port as it did at sea.

On April 26, 1956, the Ideal-X sailed from Newark with 58 containers. Loading it cost about 16 cents a ton, against $5.83 a ton for loose cargo. Turnaround went from days to hours.

Marc Levinson tells the story in The Box. His point: the breakthrough wasn't the box. It was the whole industry agreeing on one.

Live music is the port before the box

Four companies put on every show: the talent buyer, the agency, the artist manager and the tour manager. They work together every day, and they are good at it.

The tools are the problem. Each company runs its own software, so every handoff (the offer, the contract, the advance, the settlement) is an email that someone at the next company types again.

What Cuelight is

Shipping had the box. Music has Cuelight, the operating system of the music business. Each of the four companies gets a full workspace on one system, and the work moves between them without being typed again.

  • Talent buyers and venues write the offer once and run the whole show from it.
  • Agencies get offers as deals, not attachments.
  • Artist managers see the roster's whole year without asking for it.
  • Tour managers get the show already filled in.

Lightix, Cuelight's ticketing brand, puts the show on sale without anyone typing it again, from the first offer to last call.

One show. Four companies. Nobody typed it twice.

Why the name

A cue light is the signal backstage that tells every department it is time. One light, and lighting, sound and stage move together.

Cuelight is that signal for the business of live music: when one company moves, everyone on the show has it. The whole business, on cue.

Where we are

Every company that touches a show belongs on the same system. We're adding the seats one at a time, and this is where each one stands today:

  • Talent buyers and venues: book a demo.
  • Tour managers and their production teams: plans from $29/month.
  • Agencies and artist managers: private beta.
  • Lightix: on sale October 15, 2026.
